NPB news June 10, 2022

Japan’s final interleague series got started Friday with the Central League-leading Yakult Swallows trying to lock up their first interleague championship in a three-game set against the Pacific League-leading SoftBank Hawks, starting with a heat vs finesse duel in the opener.

Friday was also Roki Eve, with young Mr. Sasaki’s start pushed back a day, ostensibly to give him more rest, although he’s been getting shoved off the front page for a while.

Senga deactivated

SoftBank Hawks ace Kodai Senga was deactivated Saturday, due to minor tightness in his right elbow following his start on Friday against the Lotte Marines, Nishinihon Sports reported.

The 29-year-old, who aspires to pitch in MLB next season, was pulled from his starts after allowing four runs over four innings, although Hawks skipper Hiroshi Fujimoto indicated the reason for his exit — and that of catcher Takuya Kai — was not a physical issue but the battery’s unwillingness to make use of Senga’s fastball.
