NPB news: Aug. 17, 2022

The Pacific League’s top-of-the-table clash between SoftBank and Seibu moved on to Game 2 on Wednesday, while the DeNA BayStars entered their game against Yomiuri with a 12-game home winning streak on the line, and the Hanshin Tigers looking to break their seven-game skid against Yakult.

Rain washed out Roki Sasaki’s start against Orix in Kobe, and the Marines are off on Thursday, so who knows when we’ll see if the kid can keep sizzling the way he did for most of his start last week.

Wednesday’s games

Carp 1, Dragons 0, 11 innings: At Hiroshima Citizens Stadium, Chunichi’s Hiroto Takahashi struck out 10 over seven innings, and Hiroshima’s Allen Kuri threw nine innings, but neither got a decision after the Carp cashed in their only good scoring opportunity of the game on veteran pinch-hitter Ryuhei Matsuyama’s walk-off 11th-inning double against newbie pitcher Akira Neo.

NPB news: Aug. 16, 2022

The Pacific League-leading Seibu Lions began a three-game series at home against the second-place SoftBank Hawks, while the Hanshin Tigers, who tumbled out of second place in the Central League with six straight losses, sent their best pitcher, Koyo Aoyagi against the league-leading Yakult Swallows, who had managed just six hits off him in his two games against them this year, both shutouts.

Tuesday’s games

Lions 2, Hawks 0: At Seibu Dome, Kona Takahashi (7-7) worked six innings, and a pair of good swings put the Lions ahead in the fourth inning against Shuta Ishikawa (4-7). Sosuke Genda singled to lead off the inning and Tomoya Mori met a flat 1-1 fastball that ran right onto his barrel and drove it well back in right field for his fifth home run.
