3月18、19日の２日間、東京で開催されたMLBの2試合でロサンゼルス・ドジャースとシカゴ・カブスの2連戦に5人の日本人選手が重要な役割を担うことになった。
その試合にはアメリカと日本の両国から多くの著名人が集まった。
大谷翔平がどこへ行っても注目の的であることは言うまでもなく、彼にとって母国での初のMLB公式戦は大きな話題となった。なぜなら、MLBは依然として野球界の世界のトップ選手が集まっているという点で世界最高のプロ野球リーグだからだ。30年前、野茂英雄がドジャースと契約した際、日米両国の多くの人がうまくいかないと予想した。なぜなら、日本プロ野球（NPB）のチームがMLBのチームほど強くないことを理由に、日本人選手がMLBで通用するとは誰もが思っていなかった。

Marines 5, Eagles 0: At Miyagi Stadium, the Marines played a winner-take-all game against Rakuten. Their win knocked the Eagles out of the playoff picture, and pushed the Marines into second place ahead of SoftBank.
